974 Animal Industry and Agriculture Branch

Description

In 1960, the Public Service Board had approved the amalgamation
of the Animal Industry Branch (CA 1188) and the Agricultural Branch
[II] (CA 1187). The new Branch was to be called the Stock and
Agriculture Branch. However, later the same year, it was decided that
no further action would be taken on the amalgamation, pending
consideration of the Forster Committee report on Agricultural
Development in the Northern Territory.

Approval was given in 1965 for the amalgamation of the Agricultural
Branch [II] and the Animal Industry Branch, the new Branch to be
named the Animal Industry and Agriculture Branch.
The amalgamation appears to have occurred formally with the creation
of the position of Director, Animal Industry and Agriculture Branch
in the Northern Territory Administration which was notified in the
Commonwealth Gazette of 31 March 1966 (No 28 p.1822).

Godfrey Alan Letts was provisionally promoted to the position on 17
March 1966, (Commonwealth Gazette No 25, 17 March 1966, p.1615). By
April 1968, the Branch included an Animal Industry Section and an
Agriculture Section (Commonwealth Gazette, No 37, 18 April 1968
p.2275).

The functions of the Branch as set out in the Northern Territory
1966/67 Annual Report (Appendix VI) were:

Development of agricultural and pastoral industry

Stock routes

Stock movements

Experimental farms

Research and extension work

Supervision of meat industry; meat inspection

Registration of brands

Plant and animal quarantine

Disease control

Pest destruction

Protection of indigenous fauna

Fisheries

It appears that the Animal Industry and Agriculture Branch was
sometimes locally known as the "Primary Industries Branch". No
evidence has been found for the formal use of this alternative title.

As part of the re-organisation of the Northern Territory
Administration in 1970, the responsibility for Fisheries, wild life
and parks passed to a newly created branch, the Forestry, Fisheries,
Wildlife and National Parks Branch.

The Branch became a Branch of the Department of the Northern
Territory [I] when that Department replaced the Northern Territory
Administration in 1973.

As part of the move to Northern Territory self government the
functions of the Branch passed on 1 July 1978 to the Northern
Territory Public Service Department of Industrial Development where
they formed part of the Primary Industry Division (Northern Territory
Government Directory, 1978, p.22)
